We Have a Biker!

Grace has been struggling to learn to ride her bike for quite some time (at least a year). She is so cautious and so timid (I won’t used Danny’s adjectives). The combination doesn’t make for a risk-taker.

She and Danny have been going back and forth for awhile. He took off the training wheels and put them back on twice. Then told her that was the last time once he removed them again. But the bike just sat there and Grace would ride Owen’s tricycles instead. We told her she couldn’t do that because she was a big girl.

Danny decided towards the end of the summer to take off her pedals so that she could have a “coasting” bike. She can go 20 feet just balancing on that bike. And we know she knows how to pedal….

So Super Bowl Sunday, while Daddy was watching the game. I took her out into the alley behind our house and talked her through it.

Seriously. I told her how to ride a bike. I did not hold the bike and she did not fall. She just slowly practiced and built up the courage to put her feet up on the pedals. We found a nice downhill slope and she just “got it”.

I have never seen someone learn to ride a bike without someone running along behind or at least falling splat on the road a time or two. I really wasn’t sure if she would be able to do it before Owen.

After she got going the first time she told me “Wow! I didn’t think riding a bike would be so fun!”

Now she wants to go ride her bike all the time, just like any normal kid:)

    WOW! Congratulations Grace!
I like the idea of taking off the pedals for a while. Great idea, I might have to use that with Jaidyn when she is ready!

Yay! That is such an awesome accomplishment!

Kenny has similar traits when it comes to risk taking and was terrified of the bike. He road a scooter for years in order to avoid his bike. Last summer he decided he was ready (he was 8 at the time) and hopped on and took off.
